I had a conversation through some comments to my last song of the day and I have decided to amend my groupings of The Beatles songs. The early albums will stay the same, and the middle albums change slightly. I am going to add Magical Mystery Tour to the middle group. The main reason is, as was pointed out to me that the while album and Let It Be, although great albums, are not as experimental as the middle albums. So they need to stand on their own. The problem is that Abbey Road does show some of this experimentation, so perhaps it should stand on its own.
Well that is a discussion for scholars, and my brain just does not want to think about that any more.
So far my “middle” Beatles songs have come from Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Peppers. Today’s song is from “Help“. Now this album is the first where we can see some of the new ideas coming out. My favorite song on the album is “Yesterday” (although not today’s song!). It is the first time we hear a song with only one voice and it is of course the most covered song in the history of music.
The song I am picking however, is “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away.” This song shows the influence that Bob Dylan had over John and is a real break from the earlier work they were recording.
Here is a clip of the song from the movie, and an extra special treat I found on youtube.
