Wii are proud of Avi (and The Lion King)

I have probably mentioned this in the past but one of the special things they do at Avi’s school (and most therapeutic schools) is a token economy system. Each day the kids can earn up to 100 points, 50 academic and 50 behavioral. Academic points are earned based on doing your homework, listening to instructions in class and always making an attempt even if you are not sure. Behavioral points are earned by behaving well during school. The day is broken down into 10 periods and they can earn 5 academic and 5 behavioral points each period. These points can then be used to purchase prizes at the school store.

We are blessed with a school that is great at development, and the school store is filled with great items like Lego sets, video games and even video game consoles. Last year, Avi would use his points to purchase Pokémon cards and little things. This year, he decided to save up for a Wii console. In the system, the Wii costs 15,000 points, and it would take Avi pretty much all year to save up that amount. So Avi used all of his will power to save all year long and he never spent one point throughout the year. Last week, he came home with a new Wii and was also able to get an extra game with his leftover points.

Marsha and I had decided early on that we would not get any of these console video games, but given the circumstances, we felt if Avi was able to save all his points like this, he could have the Wii. I must admit I find it fun also. The only problem is that now the kids are spending too much time on the Wii! Also it is becoming a problem when two of them want to play different things. The machine came with one remote so we did purchase two more and we borrowed some games from my brother, so for the time being they have things to play and they can play together. I am hoping that once the “newness” of it wears off, it won’t be as much of a problem.

Now what does this all have to do with The Lion King? Not much really, but it took me a few days to write about the Wii that I had something else to write about. The Theater Development Fund (TDF) has been running special performances of The Lion King and Marry Poppins for families with children on the Autism Spectrum. TDF buys out the entire theater for a performance and they provide all of the ushers and staff, who are all trained to work with children and adults on the Autism Spectrum. The show is slightly modified so that the sounds are not as loud, the lights do not dim all the way and the animal puppets, which are quite large, will be in the lobby at the start so the kids can get used to them. They also have quiet spots in the lobby for kids to go if they need to leave the theater. We have tickets for the next one of these performances on Sunday, September 30. Without a performance like this, I do not know if we would ever be able to take Avi to see a Broadway show. I thank God all the time that we are living in a society that for the most part understands diversity and is willing to accept people for what they are and what they can do rather than shunning people for what they are not or what they cannot do. We still have a long way to go, and groups like TDF are helping us to get there.

Gay Marriage

It amazes me how much press has been given to the issue of gay marriage over the past few days. Granted, the President of The United States making a remark about any controversial issue would generate press, but what really irks me is from where the majority of the press is coming. I totally understand and respect a religious organization, like a church or an Orthodox Synagogue being anti-gay marriage. What I cannot understand and do not respect are political groups and candidates for office using this issue as a ploy to help them in their agenda. Homosexuality is NOT a political issue, no matter who is telling you that it is. A cornerstone of the Republican Party is to take power away from the federal government and give it to the states. That is all well and good, but when it comes to a person’s reproductive rights, or a person’s sexual orientation, suddenly this is a national issue and one that needs to be dealt with on a national level. When states vote to allow gay marriage, in comes the Republican Party to squash it by any means. Clearly they are just doing what they need to appease the far right who are militantly anti-gay marriage for religious reasons (which by the way I don’t believe that those arguments hold any weight either, but that is for another day). I sometimes wonder if these politicians truly believed in what they were saying when it comes to these issues.

Rush Limbaugh said on his program “We’ve arrived at a point where the President of the United States is going to lead a war on traditional marriage.” A WAR. Really. That’s quite a remarkable statement. I really, really want to know how gay marriage hurts any other kind of marriage. Truly! I want an answer to this question. What horrible things are going to happen to the world because two men marry? I highly doubt much will change. There are far greater threats to traditional marriage in America then gay’s marrying. How about the very high percentage of divorce in America? That is not happening because women are marrying each other, yet that is hurting traditional marriage. How about how hard our corporate society works their employees? People expected to be at work for 10 or even 12 hours a day while they miss out on all the life experiences of their families. That is REALY hurting traditional marriage. Gay marriage? Where is the harm in that?

Bristol Palin also blasted the President about his statement in favor of same sex marriage. She commented on the fact that the President said his seeing same sex parents of his girls’ friends helped mold his opinion. She suggests that he should not be using his children’s life experiences in shaping his ideas. WOW what a suggestion. She suggests that is like if the President appointed Dora the Explorer as Secretary of State because of her success in stopping Swiper the Fox (maybe not a bad idea!) Ms. Palin, I am curious, who’s life experiences we should use when shaping our ideas and opinions. As readers of my blog know, my son Avi is autistic. Should the fact that he is autistic not shape my world view?

I think it is time for politics to get out of the morality policing business. Get back to running the country and dealing with more pressing issues, like the economy and job creation. Perhaps this is why our founding fathers chose to separate our government from religion.

Brisket

I promised a number of people that I would post my standard goto brisket recipe. I have cooked many different brisket recipes and although many of them are very good, I often find myself coming back to this one. It is simple, fairly quick and always tastes great. I have to warn everyone in advance though, there are no measurements in this recipe. I based it on a recipe I found somewhere that did not have amounts, and although I have made a few changes to it, I choose to leave it without amounts and leave that up to the cook.

For those interested in learning about brisket (if you do not want to, skip to the recipe), the brisket is the cut of meat that comes from breast (lower chest) of a cow. Because cows do not have collar bones, these muscles support about 60% of the weight of the cow. This means that there are significant amounts of connective tissue in the meat. For a long time, the brisket was a very cheap cut of meat because no one wanted to take the time needed to cook it properly. Brisket became a very common Jewish food for special occasions because it was affordable. Of course today, that is not the case. Brisket needs to cook at a low tempreture for long periods of time in order to break down that connective tissue. What this does is make a very tough cut of meat extremely tender. Aside from being a traditional Jewish cut of meat, brisket is also the standard meat for southern or Texas barbeque.

The most important thing is to get a quality brisket. It should have a layer of fat on one side. Do not trim the fat! Cut up some vegetables (onions, celery, carrots, etc) and place in roasting pan with brisket (fat side up!). Cover the brisket with tomato sauce. Sprinkle on some onion soup mix and brown sugar. Cover and place in oven for a long time (until the meat is tender).

That’s it! It is so easy anyone can do it. I am promise you that it will be one of the bets briskets you have ever tasted.

What’s RIGHT with the Orthodox

I for one am glad to be proven wrong! I have been reading all over the internet right wing Orthodox responses to the situation in Beit Shemesh and across the board, what I am reading is outrage against the so called ultra-Orthodox in Beit Shemesh. Read this wonderful article from Aish Hatorah, a very right wing ultra-Orthodox organization that I would normally have no connection to. Thank God good things can come from bad.

My hypothesis was that the Orthodox allow these things to happen without denouncing them. Clearly that is not happening now, and I hope that this is a trend that will see all Jews begin to see that we are all members of the same tribe.

What is wrong with the Orthodox?

Let me start out by saying that I am about to get into some trouble. I know that there are a lot of people who might take some offense at some of what I am about to say, and I sincerely apologize for this now. Just like anything else in the world, there is no ONE Orthodoxy, and many of my friends are Orthodox and I admire and respect them.

That being said, “What IS wrong with the Orthodox?” For my friends who are not in tune with Judaism in America and Israel today, let me give you a little background. Prior to the 18th Century, Jewish life in the world was mostly confined to semi-insulated communities. A community would have their Rabbi and the Rabbi would make religious decisions for them. There did exist a hierarchy of rabbinical leadership and community Rabbi could seek guidance from other “greater” Rabbis in his area or even from other large cities or countries. During the middle to end of the 18th Century however, Jewish people were gaining more freedoms in the western world. This era has been called the age of enlightenment. Assimilation into the general society was of course a major effect of enlightenment and with enlightenment came early reformers of Judaism. Rabbis were begging to preach that the Synagogue worship service should be made to look like the Church service. The Orthodox movement began as an opposition to this early German reform.

As time went on, Reform and Orthodoxy made their way to America (and soon after the Conservative Movement was founded in the US, and outgrowth of the German Positive-Historical school). During the 19th and early 20th Centuries, the movements existed very apart from each other in the US, and while they clearly opposed each other’s beliefs and practices, there was little interaction and American Jewish Religious life was still mainly controlled by the Orthodox. As the Conservative and Reform movements grew in the 20th Century, the Orthodox also grew and started to become more rigid in its interpretations of Jewish Law, probably as a reaction to the Conservative movements more progressive interpretation of Jewish Law. For example, when Kraft cheese was introduced in America in the 1920s many Orthodox Jews ate their products. As time went on however, and Jewish owned and Rabbinically supervised cheese became readily available in the supermarkets, Orthodoxy banned the use of Kraft and other such products. I am generalizing things here but It is very clear that over the last decades of the 20th and early decades of the 21st centuries, American Orthodoxy has moved to the right. In Israel, similar divides have sprung up with the added twist that the Religious right also has some political power.

Now, what does all of this mean, and why bring it up. Recently, in the Israeli city of Beit Shemesh, an eight year old girl, walking to her all-girl Orthodox school was harassed by ultra-Orthodox men who spat on her and called her a whore for dressing immodestly. Now, being Orthodox herself, the little girl was wearing a long skirt and sleeves that covered her arms to the wrist. Certainly not what I would call immodest. This little girl and her story has prompted rallies and a national outrage in Israel over the divide between the ultra-Orthodox and the more centrist Orthodox and the secular majority. Of course, everyone that I know, regardless of their religious affiliation, is sickened by these events. As they should be.

When I ask my question, “What is wrong with the Orthodox,” I do not mean to offend everyone who is Orthodox, but I do want to understand how things like this can happen in the name of Orthodoxy. Where did things go wrong and why? A few years back, Marsha and I were in Israel for the holiday of Shavuot and like much of religious Jerusalem, we went to the Kotel, the Western Wall for early services. We were praying with a group of students from the Conservative Movement School in Jerusalem, way back in the plaza, far from the wall itself. During this prayer service, ultra-Orthodox students from a Yeshiva in the old city began to throw garbage and yelling slurs and curses at the group. I can come up with many more examples of intolerance from the ultra-Orthodox.

Having given this some thought I can come up with two reasons why I think these things are occurring with more and more frequency. The first reason is partly why I choose to affiliate with the Conservative Movement, and the second reason is, I believe one of the two greatest failures of the State of Israel. My first thought is that the movement of Orthodox to the right, in and of itself, is allowing these things to happen. We often joke about the “humra of the month club” (a humra being a very stringent ruling in Jewish law that restricts or inhibits in some way) but I see this as part of the problem. My earlier example of Kraft cheese is a humra, and another is Glatt Kosher. I do not want to go into the history of Glatt Kosher (click here to learn all about it), but in the early 20th century almost all Jews who kept Kosher did not eat Glatt and probably did not even know what it was. When Jews from Hungary came to the US they brought their humra of Glatt and it slowly became the standard for all Orthodoxy. I am not saying that people should stop eating only Glatt, but I am saying that people who eat only Glatt need to remember that non-Glatt meat is still Kosher! Many in the ultra-Orthodox world will consider non-Glatt as non-Kosher. This has gone even further where I have seen signs for Glatt Kosher Chicken (only mammals can be Glatt Kosher) and even Glatt Kosher Bakeries!!!!!

As Orthodoxy moves to the right, those on the far fanatical end of the right seem to be more tolerated by those who have moved closer to them. This is not only a Jewish phenomenon, but a human phenomenon as can be seen with the Taliban in Afghanistan (some of the signs carried at the rally in Beit Shemesh compared situation to the Taliban!) As long as centrist-Orthodoxy continues to tolerate the far right, I do not see things like this slowing down.

As for the second reason, we have to go back to the founding of the state of Israel. In an effort to try and preserve the religious culture of the Jews, Ben-Gurion and the early Israeli Government gave the ultra-orthodox exemptions from national service. They allowed them to run their own schools (with public funding) and in some ways gave them a level of autonomy not given to any other Jewish community in Israel. Over time, this community has grown faster than any other Jewish community. And they have become politically active. In Israel, the political party that controls 61 or more votes in the 120 seat Knesset chooses the prime minister and controls the government. Since no one party can get that many seats anymore, they have to create coalitions with smaller parties and this gives these smaller parties a lot of power. Many of these smaller parties are ultra-Orthodox. So we end up with a state where the authorities basically leave the ultra-Orthodox alone and let them get away with things like this.

This has a simple solution! Of course nothing is really simple, but there are enough members of Knesset who are in non-religious parties that if they all banded together, they could take away the power of the ultra-orthodox. This is hard of course because some of them have very different ideas about the future of Israel, but I believe that if the main parties, Kadima, Likud, Labor and a few other smaller secular parties could gather the courage to do this, what a different place Israel could be!

So, “What is wrong with the Orthodox?” Really nothing. It is the willingness of some people to allow intolerance to thrive that stains the name Orthodoxy.

PS – If you want to know what I think is the second greatest failure of the State of Israel, comment on this blog posting and I will comment back with my answer.

Baruch Dayan HaEmet – Blessed be the True Judge

On Sunday afternoon a very dear friend, Lanie Schwarz, passed away after suffering a stroke on Friday. Lanie was amazing person, and for a number of years was like a second mother to me. Lanie and her husband Lew were members of the Synagogue where I grew up in Union NJ. My family knew them because they had sent their kids to the Solomon Schechter School in Union that I also attended. Their kids were a little older, but being that we were all active in our Synagogue I would see them quite often. When their kids were at Schechter, they began to live a more Jewishly observant lifestyle which included Shabbat Observance. When I was in college and became Shomer Shabbat myself, I would often stay at their house when I came home for Shabbat because my parents lived too far from the Synagogue and I wanted to attend Synagogue.

As time went on, I would end up spending countless Shabbatot with them. We would talk about all kinds of topics, but a lot of the time I would hear Lanie talk about her kids and eventually her grandkids. I know that she loved them all greatly and she clearly smiled more when she was talking about them. But smile is what she did most of the time. Lanie was a woman who I saw as happy with her life and a person who loved people. After some time Lew and Lanie moved from Union to Randolph, and a few years later, my parents moved to the same development so I continued to see them frequently over the years (my parent’s new home is walking distance to the Synagogue and around the corner from the Schwarz’). One of my fondest memories of Lanie was when she was dancing at my wedding. Two of her children are married with children, but I think she saw my wedding as the wedding of another of her “kids” and she danced as a parent would dance at the wedding of their child.

Lanie was the ultimate dugma (example) for Hachansat Orchim (welcoming guests). In Union, aside from having me at her home, she would have USYers stay there when her kids were in high school. She would have guest lecturers stay there when they came to our Synagogue. In Ranolph, she would be first in line to offer her home for any guests coming for s’machot (festive occasions). Her life was an example of Jewish living that we all should strive to emulate. As long as we can continue to live up to her dugma, her life will continue on through all of us.

Lanie died as she lived, at peace with the world. Her children and grandchildren were there to see her before she left and she was able to speak with them. I know that wherever her soul is now, she is grateful for the time she spent in life and extremely proud of all of our children and grandchildren. May her memory be for a blessing.

Top Ten Best Songs on Glee

Yesterday I wrote about why I love Glee and began a list of my 50 favorite songs in honor of the 300th Glee performance and it turns out, also the 50th episode of Glee. For those who think I have too much time on my hands, I have been working on this list over a long time with my Glee playlist on my mp3 player. In 300 songs, the Glee cast has broken a number of records. For the past two years, the Glee Cast has held the world record for the most hit singles in a calendar year. The cast charted 79 Hot 100 singles on the Billboard chart in 2010 (26 in the top 40). So far for 2011 there are 52 Hot 100 singles (12 in the top 40). So far they have 164 Hot 100 singles in total. To put a little perspective on all of this, The next closest is Elvis Presley who had 108 Hot 100 singles in his career and then James Brown with 91, Lil Wayne with 82, Ray Charles with 74, Aretha Franklin with 73 and the Beatles with 71. The next best Year record is the Beatles with 31 in 1964, six of which were number one hits (and two that stayed as number two because the number one hits were their own).

Of course a big help here is the vast number of songs. The Beatles recorded just over 200 songs in their career (not looking for debate here) so about 35% of their songs were Hot 100 hits. For the Glee cast 164 out of 300 is actually over 50% of their songs, so it is remarkable, but Elvis with approximately 700 recorded songs had about the same as the Beatles about 35%. So however you look at it, it is a remarkable record.

A few people asked me how I left off certain songs from the list yesterday. Well some will be below and my first Glee playlist had over 150 songs in it! I tried to chop that down to a list that I could comment on. Perhaps if I made the list now, I would include some other songs and everyone’s listening tastes change all the time. I could never tell you what my favorite Beatles song was and I probably could not tell you my favorite Glee song either.

Now without further ado, here, in a basically chronological order is my Top Ten List! (click on each song title to go to a youtube of the song)

  1. Somebody To Love – This song from episode 5 of season 1 is still in my mind the best group number they ever did. It has been used in multiple flash mobs and lib dubs on you tube from the moment they released it. Queen’s music lends itself so well to choral arrangements and I hope they do some more as the show continues.
  2. Keep Holding On – This song by Avril Lavigne from the movie Eragon never got that far for her (it made it to 17 in the Hot 100 list), but this arrangement and performance on the show was so beautiful. From episde 7 of season 1, I think it comes a close second as the best group number.
  3. Imagine – OK, so this song is perhaps one of the 10 most well-known songs ever recorded. It is gorgeous and haunting at the same time. Given that it is so easy to mess it up. In episode 11 of season 1, New Directions has a sing off with the two groups they will face in sectionals. One of the groups is a deaf school and they start out signing the song with one of them reciting it with just a simple piano in the background. After a few moments the kids in New Directions are so moved that they slowly join in (and stings and orchestra) and sing the song and learn the signing. I was so moved by this performance and I still feel goose bumps when I listen to it. If you have not heard this, please click the list and listen.
  4. Gives You Hell – In Episode 14 , the first after the sectionals, the theme of the songs was “Hello”. Rachel was mad at Finn so she chose to knock off the “o” and led the group with this incredible rendition of this song by The All American Rejects. I know it is an angry song, but it sounds so lively and fun that you just want to roll down the windows and sing out loud with it.
  5. Valerie – Season two episode 9 had Santana lead a song (finally!) . Naya Rivera is perhaps the best singer all around singer on the show and is still underused. Her character is amazing and I think we will see a lot more of her as this seasons progresses. She led the Amy Winehouse version of the Zuton’s song.
  6. Thriller / Heads Will Roll – The attempt in season 2 episode 11 to bring together the football team and New Directions ended with this fabulous mash up of the Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Heads Will Roll. The production included costuming similar to the Thriller music video and sounds amazing.
  7. Landslide – I love Fleetwood Mac and although there was a whole episode devoted to them (season 2 episode 19) this song from episode 15 of season 2 has Gwyneth Paltrow’s Holly Holliday singing the Dixie Chicks version of the song. In the production, Santana is getting ready to confess her love to Brittany and truly feeling like being in a landslide. Her tearful backup is beautiful and very emotional. (Watch this one too!)
  8. I Feel Pretty / Unpretty – Perhaps the best duet of the show this song from season 2 episode 18 has both Rachel and Quinn contemplating the way the see themselves. Quinn, as we discover, was an overweight little girl and Rachel contemplates having a nose job. I Feel Pretty is of course from the Broadway musical My Fair Lady and Unpretty is a song by TLC that talks about woman’s struggle with self image. This is one of the best arranged and best used songs in Glee.
  9. Uptown Girl – Just last week in season 3 episode 5 we got this beautiful arrangement of Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl. It did not drive the plot at all, but the Warblers sounded fabulous and the perfect use of a teacher as the “uptown girl” in the production was genius.
  10. America – Also from last week the school performance of West Side Story goes on and Santana’s incredible lead in America is so powerful, I would love to see her really do the show. They reworked the entire song to fit in both the women and men, but it worked amazingly and the staging was perfect.

So there you have my top ten list. Whether you agree with my choices or not, Glee is still some of the best music being recorded today.

Enjoy!

GLEE

Last night’s episode of Glee marked the 300th musical performance of the show. It is an amazing milestone especially in an era when television and movie musicals are very few and far between. I love Glee for many reasons. Of course the musical performances are fabulous. The show would not exist without the music and the producers have brought together the most amazing cast and created wonderful characters. Every week I cannot wait to hear Rachel sing, see Mike Chang dance, or hear whatever sharp and funny one liners Sue has for Will.

But beyond the music I think there is no other TV show today striving to show that being different is acceptable. New Directions, the Glee’s show choir is made up of the most diverse characters as possible. An openly gay teenager, a misfit girl with a voice that can go up against any Broadway star, a wheelchair bound introvert, etc. I wish I had a show like Glee when I was in high school; it might have made things just a little bit better.

There are a few things that I think the show gets wrong (last week Rachel and Finn and Curt and Blain having sex for the first time, and the horrible over use of auto-tuning), but all in all I love the show and I think that if I had a teenager I would probably let them watch.

This morning on my way in to work I started thinking about what are my favorite Glee songs since the show began. So I sat down (during lunch time of course!) and ended up with a list of 47 songs and a few whole episodes. I could try to break it down further, but I am going to pass on that. So in honor of Glee’s 300th musical performance, in a somewhat chronological order, here is my list of the top 50 songs. At the end I will list my actual top 10. There are too many songs to find you tube links to them all, so if you want to hear, search on you tube with glee and the name of the song.

  1. Don’t Stop Believin’ – The first big hit and still an incredible arrangement. After I saw this performance in the pilot I knew I was hooked.
  2. Maybe This Time – Episode 5 brought us Kristin Chenoweth as April Rhodes, and this amazing “duet” between April and Rachel of Maybe This Time from Cabaret.
  3. Alone – Also from Episode 5 a fun duet of the Heart tune featuring Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Morrison and April and Will.
  4. Defying Gravity – In episode 8 we get to really hear Kurt shine with his amazing counter-tenor voice. This “duet” with Rachel is one of the best of the show and was released as a duet and as two solo singles.
  5. Proud Mary – Episode 9 featured the group in wheelchairs and an amazing arrangement of the Ike and Tina Turner version of the song.
  6. Don’t Stand So Close to Me / Young Girl – This episode (10) brought us perhaps the best Mash-up. Glee helped make Mash-up a household term.
  7. Lean On Me – Also from Episode 10 a beautiful rendition of this Bill Withers classic.
  8. True Colors – Also in episode 11 is great performance of Cindy Lauper’s True Colors featuring Tina in lead.
  9. Don’t Rain on My Parade – Glee’s use of both popular music and Broadway music is masterful. This may be the best Broadway piece in Glee from episode 13
  10. You Can’t Always Get What You Want – One of the best group songs featured in episode 13
  11. Hello, Goodbye – I was doubtful about a Beatles tune in Glee, but they did a good job with this song in episode 14
  12. Power of Madonna Episode – Not just one song, but all of the songs in episode 15!
  13. Fire – A very hot duet between April and Will of this incredible Springsteen tune from episode 16.
  14. The Lady is a Tramp – Episode 18 brought us a great duet between Puck and Mercedes with this classis Sinatra song.
  15. Dream On – In episode 19 Neil Patrick Harris guests as an old rival of Wills, and they do a hilarious (and amazing) duet of Aeorsmith’s Dream On.
  16. Safety Dance – A great song and dance number from episode 19 featuring Artie.
  17. I Dreamed a Dream – Episode 19 also revealed that Shelby (Idina Menzel) is Rachel’s Birth mother. They sing an emotion duet of the showstopping Les Miserables song.
  18. Bad Romance – Episode 20 included a number of Lady Gaga numbers and this is the best!
  19. Beth – Kiss was also included in episode 20 with their chart topping power ballad.
  20. Pokerface – One more from episode 20 is this duet with Rachel and Shelby.
  21. Bohemian Rhapsody – The most over the top number ever on Glee from episode 22.
  22. To Sir With Love – Episode 22 (the last of the first season) brought us this gem with the group singing to Mr. Schuster.
  23. Over the Rainbow – Finally at the end of the 1st season, Will sings the Israel Kamakawiwoʻole version of the classic song.
  24. Papa Can You Hear Me – In episode 3 of season 2 Rachel sings this song from Yentl and sounds like she is channeling Barbara.
  25. I Want To Hold Your Hand – Episode 3 also has second Beatles song to be featured on Glee, this version is from the movie Across the Universe.
  26. Bridge Over Troubled Waters – Lastly from episode 3 we get the Aretha Franklin version of the Simon and Garfunkel classic.
  27. Rocky Horror Glee Show – Again an entire episode, episode 5 of season 2 has the major songs from the show Rocky Horror.
  28. Don’t Cry For Me Argentina – An amazing “duet” featuring Kurt and Rachel in episode 9 of the powerful song from Evita.
  29. Silly Love Songs – Episode 12 brought us the Warbler’s version of the great McCartney song.
  30. Blackbird – The third Beatles tune on Glee is beautifully sung by Kurt in episode 16
  31. Turning Tables – Adele’s song is masterfully performed by Gwyneth Paltrow in episode 17.
  32. Dreams – A third amazing whole episode, number 19, features music from Fleetwood Mac.
  33. Rolling in the Deep – Another Adele song from episode 20 features Rachel and Jesse (Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff were the stars of the Broadway Musical Spring Awakening).
  34. Pure Imagination – From episode 21 comes this emotional number from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
  35. Somewhere – From episode 2 of season 3 comes this beautiful rendition of the West Side Story song featuring Rachel and Shelby.
  36. Out Here On My Own – The song from the movie Fame is sung by Rachel and Mercedes in episode 3.
  37. Bein’ Green – The classic Kermit the Frog song is sung by newcomer Rory in episode 3
  38. Just You and I / Just You and I – A skillful mash-up from episode 4 of two songs with the same name, one by lady Gaga and one by Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle.
  39. Hit Me With Your Best Shot / One Way or Another – A second great Mash-up from episode 4
  40. I Can’t Go For That / You Make My Dreams – Episode 4 is a Mash-up episode and here is another with two songs by Hall and Oates.
  41. Rumour Has it / Someone Like You – Two songs from Adele mashed up in Episode 4.

This blog post has become so long that I think I will leave my top ten for tomorrow.

Enjoy!

Vermont Vacation Day 5

Our last full day of Vermont ended up pretty good.  We went to Cabot Creamery in morning.  It is about a 50 minute drive from Stowe, and the kids were really great in the car.  We got there and had to wait 20 mintues for the next tour and again, the kids were really good.  They had tons of cheese for us to sample and also other dairy products like butter and dips.  We had our fill and then took the tour which was very interesting, and Avi was even asking a lot of questions.  Certainly a highlight of the trip!

After Cabot, we went back to the resort for lunch and then after a short rest time we (finally) made our way to the Kodesh Kodashim (Holy of Holies), Ben and Jerrys.  We got there at about 3:30 and they were giving out tickets for the 4:20 tour.  We could have bought Ice Cream then but the line was so long we were afraid that we would not make the tour.  So we browsed the gift shop and just hung out (even met a frum family from Passaic!)  The kids loved the tour and the taste of Ice Cream at the end.  I was very surprised to learn that Ben and Jerrys had been bought by Unilever a number of years ago.  I had not idea.  But they had a special deal with Unilever that Ben and Jerrys would be an autonomus company with and not have to change any of its social action ways.  Thank God for that, because Ben and Jerrys, having been founded by two nice red sea pedestrians, is all about social justice.

After the tour (when the line was short) we purchased the mini Vermonster (4 scoops of ice cream topped with fresh baked brownie, chocolate chip cookie, banana, hot fudge, whipped cream plus 4 more toppings!) to share.  It was great!  Of course, it was now close to 5:30 pm and we did not want to think about dinner.  We ended up waiting until about 7 to get the grill going and I grilled hotdogs and we finished up other leftovers.

All in all a great day (which of course was topped off with packing up to leave tomorrow morning).  I doubt I will blog tomorrow, but I have no idea what to expect from our trip.  Hopefully Avi will be better behaved.  We shall see…
