What the *#&%$!@ is wrong with Alaskans?

What goes on up there in Alaska? I have heard it is a beautiful place to visit and someday I hope to get there. But I will repeat. What the !@#$%^& is wrong with the people up there. First they go and elect Sarah Palin as their governor. Ok, I can almost forgive them this. Yeah she is a right wing nut who would be happy burning books in her library. But she is good looking and speaks like one of the people. I guess in Alaska all you need is love
good looks you fill in the blank.

Yesterday, the New York Times reported that Mark Begich, a democrat, won the Senate seat away from 6 term senator Ted Stevens (thank God). This is good news. What gets me is that there were only about 3,700 votes separating the two of them. Races like this are common in America today, but what is not common is that the person running for office is a convicted criminal (ok he was convicted on ethics charges, but still a crime). 49% of the voters in Alaska voted for a convicted felon to be their Senator. What is going on with that? I shudder to think where the Republican Party is going if they were telling voters to vote for him!

Luckily 51% of the Alaskan people are smart enough to realize that we don’t elect criminals to the US Senate. I don’t care if you are Democrat, Republican, Independent or what. I hope that people can come away from this with a lesson learned.

Song of the day

My love of The Beatles has clearly transferred to my children. Both Avi and Noam know many Beatles tunes, and they can usually identify a Beatles song even if they have not heard it before (I’m very proud). Now Shayna is also getting into the groove and she also knows Beatles songs. Of course she knows many of the words in Yellow Submarine (which was also Avi and Noam’s first Beatles song), but there is another song that all of them seem to like and often ask for.

The film Yellow Submarine has a very interesting story. In 1964 The Beatles contracted with United Artists to make three motion pictures. The first was the wonderful A Hard Day’s Night and the second was the not as wonderful HELP! Soon after they produced the British television movie Magical Mystery Tour which was very poorly received.

Not really wanting to do any more movies, but still having one movie left to make for UA, the group agreed to give their music to an animated film. Five new songs were added to a bunch of Beatles hits and the movie Yellow Submarine was born. Actors were hired to do the group’s voices and the movie was a big hit. In fact The Beatles themselves like the movie so much they added a short live scene at the very end in which they all appeared.

My kids love this movie (after having seen it at our friend’s house in Vermont) and became particularly fond of the song All Together Now which is one of the new songs.

Here are two videos with the song, one is where the song appeared in the movie and the other is the reprise at the end of the film. My kids get a real kick out of the end in that the words all together now are translated into many languages including Hebrew so they all keep an eye out for that.

Enjoy!

Saturday Morning Breakfast

Traditionally we do not eat a full meal before services, especially on Shabbat morning. So I usually make some sort of muffin or “bread”. The past few weeks it has been Pumpkin Bread, and here is the yummy recipe. It comes from the Kindergarten teachers at Noam’s school, Solomon Schechter Day School of Raritan Valley.

One quick note, instead of cinnamon and allspice, I use something called cinnamon plus by Pampered Chef. Mkm is a pampered chef consultant and sells their wonderful products. Cinnamon Plus is a mixture of cinnamon, allspice, cloves and nutmeg.

Enjoy!

Pumpkin Bread
adapted by Phil Goldwasser

3 Cups of all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp baking soda
2 Tbsp baking powder
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1 Tbsp allspice

4 eggs beaten
2 Cups sugar
1 Cup oil
2 Cups pumpkin

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flower, salt, baking soda and powder and spices.
  2. In a second bowl, beat the eggs and whisk in the sugar and then the oil.
  3. Mix in the pumpkin.
  4. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry and mix until incorporated.
  5. Bake at 350° for 1 hour. Test for doneness and bake longer if needed.

Song of the day

I have been posting the songs included on each episode of Life on Mars (although I missed last week). I am including a list of last night’s songs, plus a pick for song of the day that was from last week’s episode.

On top of this, I would love people to check out two sights. My friend Wrekehavoc has been posting every day this month for National Blog Posting Month (nablopomo). She always has a theme for things like this and she has chosen blatantly bad 70s music. Check it out, it’s fun. On the other hand, if you would like to hear blatantly GOOD 70s music, go to the Life on Mars website and they have a 70s radio stream, playing great songs from the 70s.

Anyway, here are last night’s songs.

Sweet Lucy by The Propositions
Sweet Lucy

We’re an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad
[youtube= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lo6HONeuT-M]

Going to Make a Time Machine by The Majestic Arrows

Tuesday’s Dead by Cat Stevens
[youtube= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0a-1e6Xktk]

And my pick for song of the day is from last week’s episode. The episode was about race relations in the 1970s which of course is a very difficult topic, but I think they played it fairly well. In 1954 David Arkin (father of Alan and grandfather of Adam) and Earl Robinson wrote a song as a response to the landmark decision of the US Supreme Court, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas. This was the decision that overturned the 1896 case Plessy v. Ferguson and others by declaring the establishment of separate public schools or black and white students unconstitutional. It stated that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.”

The song that these men wrote was called Black and White. It was first recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. in 1957 but became a number one hit when Three Dog Night recorded it in 1972. This song was in many ways as landmark as the Supreme Court decision, especially the version by Three Dog Night. This was a group of white people singing about racial equality in 1972. Something that till that time was unheard of. I cannot say that the song had any major impact in of itself, but I can say that it was due to people like this that helped to change the world and bring racial equality to a time when a black person can be elected President of the United States.

Enjoy!

Barack Obama and The West Wing

To this day one of my favorite TV shows is the West Wing. I think it was one of the most (if not the most) well written shows that I can recall and the fact that it was so popular in America gave me hope that the real “silent majority” in America were really, deep down, socially conscious. Yesterday the New York Times published an article paralleling the campaigns of Obama and McCain to those of the fictional Matthew Santos and Arnold Vinick in the last two seasons of the West Wing.

I won’t repeat the article here, it is worth reading. But I will say again that the fact that a show about a very liberal white house could get as popular as it did IS I believe testament to where Americans really are in their political thinking. Finally after eight years of failed conservative policy we are on the brink of finally bringing a liberal administration to the white house which will work to put our nation back on the right track. And if you are not sure, just take a look at this column from the Telegraph in London.

And since I am talking about the West Wing I had to add this little thing. The last episode of the 2nd Season contains what I think was the greatest moment in dramatic television. The you tube is below, but I want to set the stage for it for those who did not watch the show. President Bartlett is in his third year of his first term in office and was contemplating not running for re-election. He suffers from MS and that was kept from the public. In the midst of all of this and the tribulations of being president, his secretary, Mrs. Landingham purchased her first car ever and while she was driving it for the first time, she was killed by a drunk driver hitting her car. She was probably one of the two most important people in his life and he knew her since he was a boy.

The scene below is right after her funeral at the National Cathedral.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FScv89J6rro]

Here is the translation of the latin:

Gratias tibi ago, domine
Thank you, Lord.

Haec credam a deo pio, a deo justo, a deo scito?
Am I to believe these things from a righteous God, a just God, a wise God?

Cruciatus in crucem
To Hell with your punishments

uus in terra servus, nuntius fui; officium perfeci
I was your servant, your messenger on the earth, I did my duty.

Cruciatus in crucem (with a dismissive wave of the hand) eas in crucem
The Hell with your punishments! And to Hell with you! (literally, “may you go to a cross”)

Song of the day

Life on Mars continues to wow me every time I watch it. And it is not only because of the music (although that is a major part). The writing and acting are excellent. What happens when a good cop schooled in modern 21st Century policing techniques finds himself in 1973? Tune in to find out!

This week’s songs:

Mother and Child Reunion by Paul Simon

Song of the day

After two episodes of Life On Mars I am definitely loving the show. The music is still a major draw. Here is a rundown on the amazing 70’s soundtrack from the last episode (who knows, I may make this a weekly thing)

Enjoy!

All the Way From Memphis by Mott the Hoople
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7zRbDkm4Jo]

Get Down by Gilbert O’Sullivan
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrKkbZZMNWg]

I am a Rock by Simon and Garfunkel
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My9I8q-iJCI]

The episode also features Life on Mars by David Bowie, and I included that in a past song of the day.

Song of the day special

No favorite Lyric Friday today.

I have spoken about my horrible habit of watching too much TV in the past, but I need to write about one of the best shows I have seen in a long while. Last night, I watched the new show Life on Mars. This is actually a show based on a BBC show from 2006 (I mean can Hollywood come up with a good concept on their own anymore?) The show is about a Detective in the NYPD who runs his division in lower Manhattan. While on a case he gets hit by a car and wakes up 35 years in the past, in 1973.

I won’t go into more details than that, as to not give anything away. The reason, though, I want to bring this up here is the great used of music in this show. I believe I wrote about the show swingtown earlier in the summer. That show, which also takes place in the 70s, had a wonderful soundtrack, but in that show, the music was just hit songs from the 70s that “happened” to be playing on the radio in the scene, and had not real connection to the show.

In Live on Mars, the music seems to be an integral part of the show. The producers seem to have worked hard to make sure that the music was actually playing in 1973 and not later, and to find music to fit what is going on in the action. Again, I will not give any of that away, but here is a list of the 70s songs used in the show together with some youtube videos.

Life On Mars? by David Bowie (an incredible early music video!)
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueUOTImKp0k]

Signs by Five Man Electric Band
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Q7cP3ij5g]

Baba ‘O Riley by The Who
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKUBTX9kKEo]

Little Willie by Sweet
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3XGjnQgsJA]

Out Of Time by The Rolling Stones
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RJfCOD_mXE]

How bad can a TV show be with all of these great songs?

One more month

One month from tomorrow Americans will go to the polls and choose our next president. I have not made any secret of the fact that I support Barack Obama. Here are three videos about Obama and the Jewish Community.

Song of the day

Yesterday, October 5, marks the 46th anniversary of the release of The Beatles first single, Love Me Do. The song was written a few years earlier by Paul and later, John added the middle eight, as was common in their songwriting partnership. The record established The Beatles as a hit band, with the single moving very quickly to number 17 on the UK charts. Two years later it would reach number one in the US.

So In honor of this auspicious occasion, today’s song is Love Me Do.

Enjoy!
