Song of the day

It’s been a while since I have had any classical music in the song of the day. I want to remedy that right now.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756 in Salzburg, Austria. By the age of 5 he could repeat anything he heard played on the piano, and was even composing short pieces. His father took him around the world to show off his prodigy. Mozart later had positions in the courts of Salzburg and Vienne, writing over 600 compositions in his short life. He died a month and a half shy of his 36th birthday.

To this day Mozart is still one of the most influential composers in history and his music is staples in many orchestras’ repertoire.

There are many pieces in Mozart’s catalog that I love, and one of the best is the short Serenade No. 13 for stings in G major, K 525 (btw, in case anyone does not know, the K. number comes from a chronological list of Mozart’s work). This piece is better known as Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (a little night’s music). He composed this piece while he was working on the opera Don Giovanni. It is not known for whom or why he composed this piece, but it remains as one of his best known compositions.

Enjoy!

Song of the day

Ok, no snickering! That is an order! Last night mkm and I went to see an ABBA cover band at the State Theater in New Brunswick. I had wanted to see the Beatles show they were doing, but that was on Friday night, so we settled for the ABBA show on Sunday. Well, we had a blast! ABBA is a very interesting group. They became one of the biggest superstar groups worldwide, yet in the US, they never achieved the status they had in the rest of the world.

When you talk about ABBA today, people will still say, “ewwww, you like ABBA?” But secretly, these same people smile when they hear an ABBA tune on the radio. I think ABBA is the most popular group that people won’t admit to in the US! Of course with the show Mama Mia! On Broadway they have gained a bit more status in the US, but still people just won’t admit to liking them.

Anyway, one thing about ABBA that is interesting is that they were producing music videos before most groups ever heard of the genre. Back then they were often called promotional films, but ABBA spent time and effort making these videos including simple choreography and wonderful 70’s costuming.

Below is the video for Mama Mia, and I think it is one of the more famous (just watch for the close-ups on their mouths!).

Enjoy!

Happy Birthday Noam

Tomorrow is Noam’s 6th birthday. At his school the kindergarten class has parties for each kids’ birthday. Since his is in the summer, they had the party in June. This photo is from that party.

Favorite Lyric Friday

This year we planted a vegetable garden at home and we are now beginning to harvest. We have lots of cucumbers, some green bell peppers, swis chard and even corn. We really enjoyed planting this garden and next year we plan on expanding it.

In honor of our wonderful garden, today’s favorite lyric is The Garden Song by David Mallet. The song has been recorded by many people, most notably John Denver, Arlo Guthrie and Peter Paul & Mary. Here are the lyrics:

Chorus:

Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground

Inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
‘Till the rain comes tumbling down.

Pulling weeds and pickin’ stones;
Man is made of dreams and bones
Feel the need to grow my own,
‘Cause the time is close at hand.

Grain for grain, sun and rain,
Find my way in nature’s chain
Tune my body and my brain,
To the music from the land.

Plant your rows straight and long,
Temper them with a prayer and song.
Mother Earth will make you strong
If you give her love and care.

An old crow watching hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree.
And in my garden I’m as free
As that feathered thief up there.

Repeat Chorus:

Anytime I find a video that includes the Muppets that is for sure the one I am going to include. Here is John Denver singing the garden song on an episode of The Muppet Show.

Enjoy

A Million Dreams

The last week in August we are planning to spend a week at Disneyworld. Mkm and I are very big Disney fans, and the kids have been there once already. We went in 2005 a few months after Shayna was born. We deiced to go then because we felt that we cannot keep pushing it off until the youngest is old enough. We own a time share near Disney at Westgate Vacation Villas and our week is the week after Thanksgiving in November. Since this is a dead time at Disney, we decided to go then. Avi was almost 5 and not yet in Kindergarten so it was no big deal to take the kids that week.

We had a great time, and we always knew that we would come back again in a few years. I am not sure what prompted going this summer, but I think my in-laws had something to do with it. So we traded our November week for the last week in August and off we will go.

I will probably blog about our preparation for our trip over the weeks until we leave and even try to blog while at Disney.

To start, we decided right off the top that we could not fly to Florida this time as it is way too expensive. When we started talking about the trip, everything was based on the idea that our in-laws would come as well and we would drive down in their SUV. We could only imagine what it would be like with the three kids and our in-laws in a car over two days, but we realized it was the only way to afford it. Everything was agreed and we traded our week at the timeshare and we got a 2nd until for our in-laws for the same time.

A month later I was thinking about the trip and with the rising costs of gas, I was curious what it would cost to drive down there. I looked up the SUV on the internet to get the size of the gas tank and the approximate mpg. After all of this, and figuring 4 tanks of gas each way and two nights at hotels on the way down and back, I came up with about $1200. This was being conservative and it would probably be more.

I then went to the Amtrak website and looked up the cost of the Auto Train. The Auto Train is a special train that runs from Lorton Virginia (20 miles south of DC) to Sanford, Florida (just north of Orlando). You get there at by 2 pm and they put your car in a special carrier and you travel by train and get in the next morning at 9:30. Dinner and Lunch are included. So this was going to cost $1400. We have to drive the 4 hours to Virginia from New Jersey so the cost will be closer to $1600. That is probably between $200 and $400 more than driving (plus gas prices are not going down so who knows?)

This will allow us to get to our resort at about noon rather than 10 pm on Monday and we will be able to go to the first park on Tuesday having had a pretty restful day on Monday. On the way home, we will be home by 3:00 pm or so and the kids will have a good night sleep since they will start school the next day.

Next Disney blog will talk about some more of our plans for the week.

Watch this commercial from 1971. I think it’s kinda scary!

Song of the day

Most people who know me will tell you that I basically like music that is at least 25 years old.  And they would be correct.  But every once in a while a singer comes around who I just really like.  My blogging (and USY) friend Wrekehavoc posted today a video from Sesame Street which had Feist as the guest on the show singing her hit song 1234 (with the lyrics changed to be a counting song).

Of course this reminded me of the ipod nano commercial which was probably the first time I heard Feist. She is an indy rock singer who made it big because of this commercial which featured a bit of her video for 1234. I really like her voice and her music. I also love the video for 1234. Although I post videos here, I don’t usually like them as a rule. In this case, I think it may be one of the best I have ever seen, and certainly one of the best choreographed.

Enjoy!

Back again!

After a bit of a hiatus, I am back to writing again and hopefully, this time is will last a bit longer.

Things are going well in the Goldwasser household for once. Shayna continues to grow and be a very happy and wonderful 2 ½ year old. She is learning how to be a terrible two at times, but most of the time she is happy, friendly and a wonder to be around.

Noam is also a happy boy, but as always he really suffers from that middle child syndrome. Avi take a lot of our time and Shayna just always seems to be spoiled. We try hard to give him special time, and that usually works. Noam can get very angry when things don’t go his way, but I think that is normal for a 6 year old boy. That’s right, on this coming Saturday, Noam is turning 6! They grow up so fast! We are having a party for him on August 3rd, since there are three other boys in his class with birthdays around now. We just took too long to get the invites out, so we picked the 3rd (as did one of the other boys, so there are two parties that day, yikes!)

That leaves Avi of course. Avi has been going to his new school now for a few weeks. As I explained in an early posting, Avi’s day is split into 10 periods. For each period he can get 0, 1, or 2 points. At the end of the day the points are added up. 16 points or greater means the next day is a green day and 15 points or less and the next day is a red day. Red day means that you lose one privilege that day. Since Avi started he has had only two red days, and in fact since last Monday, he has had only 2 days below the max of 20 points. So far this week he is on track for 20 points each day for the week. We will get his something if he does this.

He is still struggling when he gets home, but we are working on that. First off, he is on different meds. He was moved off the Zyprexa and now takes Abilify which is usually used for bipolar disorder, although they are not giving his that label. We were also asked (again) to consider a stimulant for the ADHD. We told the new psychiatrist about our experiences and he suggested that we try Daytrana. This is Ritalin but it is administered by a patch that we put on his hip each morning. He has been on this for over a week now and so far so good. We are feeling good about his meds now and hopefully we are on the right track.

We have also found other assistance. It seems that there are agencies out there that can help with special needs children. The only problem is that they don’t advertise as they have limited funding. So after going through this for quite some time we were referred to an agency that sends a behavioral specialist to our home once a week to work with Avi and us. We are also looking into other methods of helping us learn how to help Avi.

The only other big news is our Disney trip at the end of August and I will write about that tomorrow.

One Hit Wonder Wednesday

Its been a while, but finally another One Hit Wonder Wednesday!  Today I am choosing a song that was a big hit when I was in high school and probably in the top five one hit wonders of all time.  The group is Dexys Midnight Runners and the song is Come On Eileen.

I can clearly remember dancing with my friends at USY dances to this song.  And given that one of my best friends at the time was named Eileen, the song had even more importance.

Song of the day

On Sunday, we took our kids to the Staten Island Zoo. The kids were itching to do something and we just had no clue. We had a great time there and it is such a wonderful thing to see your kids get so excited about seeing the animals.

So in honor of the Staten Island Zoo, today’s song of the day is At The Zoo by Simon and Garfunkel. This song is about a trip to the Central Park Zoo, but it celebrates zoos in general.

Enjoy!

Song of the day

Going back now to the 1960s on Broadway. John Kander and Fred Ebb were very successful with a number of hit musicals. Their most well known is probably Cabaret from 1966. They are also knows for the musical Chicago (1975) which did not really get fame until it was done in revival in 1996. Both musicals were made into highly successful movies.

Kander and Ebb were also well known for their collaboration with Liza Minnelli and they received an Emmy for their TV special Liza with a Z.

Their shows were groundbreaking. Their musical style had never been seen before and they were not afraid of using sex (or at least the idea of sex) through their work. Both shows were choreographed by Bob Fosse who’s style matched up very well with their own.

The first clip below is from the movie version of Chicago and the second from a tribute when Kander and Ebb were given the Kennedy Center Honors.
