Song of the day

mkm and I are big fans of the Theater. BK (before kids) we used to go fairly often. Now it is a very rare thing to get to the theater (except that we have a subscription to a local regional theater). There are many musicals that I am fond of. I never really rank one over another because they all are great in different ways, but if I had to pick a sort of granddaddy of my favorite shows, it will be Les Miserables.

I have seen this show about 5 times in different productions. The first time I saw it I was just blown away by the story (I then read the book), the music and the production. I highly recommend this show to everyone, and if you have not seen it, then do so some day.

When the show hit its tenth year the producers did a few special things. There was a major concert performance in London, but they also produced a 3 CD set called “Les Miserables: The Complete Symphonic Recording.” Different from any of the previous recordings, these CDs were a recording of the entire production, rather than just the big songs. It was created in an interesting way as well. The producers chose different actors from different productions around the world who they felt were the best voices for the parts. They then had the London Symphony Orchestra record all the music and then had the different actors record their voices (sometimes by themselves). The most interesting actor to appear is the Eponine who was in the Japanese production and she spoke no English!

The Valjean they chose was Gary Morris who played the part on Broadway briefly. Here is his recording of “Bring Him Home.”

Dancing with the Stars

I’ll admit it. I’m hooked! We love Dancing with the Stars. I did not watch the first few seasons, and last year we tuned in at the end of the season, but this year mkm and I are totally hooked.

Last night was a lot of fun, and I will make the prediction here and now (lets all see if I am right). Kristi Yamaguchi is going to win this season. She may have an edge over the rest because skating (a major favorite of mkm) has taught her how to move and how to use her body in a similar way. It is possible that someone else can win, but I am picking her now. I think Marlee Matlin and Priscilla Presley will also be in the competition for a while too. On the mens side I think the last three men standing will be Mario, Steve Guttenberg and Jason Taylor.

As for those to leave soon, I the first two guys to go will be Penn Gillette and Adam Carolla and the first two women Monica Seles and Shannon Elizabeth. The only reason Shannon might stay longer is because she will get popular votes because she is so beautiful.

Tune in tonight to see if I am right!

Song of the day

I am very late in writing and time is limited. I need to choose a song only because it is fun and a good beat. The Ballad of John and Yoko is a very interesting song and you can read about it at wikipedia.

Enjoy!

Sometimes drugs are not enough

Avi had a very difficult day on Saturday.  We went to Synagogue like we do every Saturday morning.  Usually Avi, Shayna and I go earlier and mkm and Noam come a bit later.  Our Synagogue has a lot of age appropriate programs for kids on Saturday morning as we have a lot of young families, but Avi has never really wanted to go.  We have learned to let him be in this case, and generally he either sits with me in services, or he just plays by himself nicely (or sometimes not so nicely) in the hallyway.  This time, though, he had brought a ball with him and at some point started throwing it around and he hit a couple of people.

In the end, as soon as mkm got there, I had to take Avi home.  I think it was the first time I had to take him home from Synagogue, but it does remind us that the medication is not a cure-all.  It helps him to focus and cope better, but it does not make him a different person.

From now on, I cannot leave him unsupervised no matter what I or mkm have to give up and we will have to work with this for now.

Sunday came along, and here was a totally different Avi.  We were back at our Synagogue for our Purim Carnival.  Unfortunately due to the fire last year, the carnival was in a different room from usual and Avi did not want to go downstairs to the room.  So he stayed upstairs helping different people doing some things in the Synagogue.  He was such a good boy and in no way resembled the Avi from Saturday.

We just have to take it day by day and hope that the good days outnumber the difficult ones.

Song of the day

“Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day.” Well, I don’t know about that, but I am not a huge fan of Mondays. I mean, who is? You would think after a nice relaxing weekend, you could wake up refreshed and ready to go, but who has nice relaxing weekends? (At least who with three little kids!).

Perhaps that is why I like the lyric. It many not be exactly what John Phillips was thinking of, but all the same, I do love the song, and the group. The Mamas and the Papas were an amazing group, and most of that is due to the beautiful harmonies and skillful arrangements that John was able put together.

Here is a video of Monday, Monday and California Dreamin.

Purim Costumes

No time to really write today. The megillah reading last night was a lot of fun. Probably close to 75 kids (plus adults)! Very noisy but a great time. Today I am cooking for guests coming for lunch tomorrow, so I will just post photos of the kids in their costumes. Sorry no song of the day. Maybe I will make it up somehow next week.

Late night and Frustrations

I did not get to make the rest of the Hamentashen on Tuesday night like I had hoped. So last night I made another 5 dozen. I had also planned on helping Avi finish his costume, but that did not happen either. arrrggggh! Nothing went right.

The pack meeting was ok but then when we got home it was right to bath and bed for the kids. Avi then did not fall asleep, despite his having his melatonin. He kept calling down to me and I think he finally drifted off around 10 pm. We were going to make rice crispy treats to add to the Mishloach Manot, but that never happened either.

What a night!

Tonight is the Megillah (Book of Esther) reading at my synagogue. Hopefully mkm will be able to finish up Avi’s costume with him late, and find Noam’s Mickey Mouse costume! I am sure it will all come together, but it will probably all be last minute. Shayna is going to be a Disney Princess. At least we know where her costume is!

Thank God I am off on Friday (although I am giving some of my time to the Rutgers Hillel so I can begin to install their new file server). The kids come home just after noon from school tomorrow and then we have guests for lunch on Shabbat (saturday afternoon)!

When do we get a vacation?

Song of the day

Yesterday I suggested that I wanted to talk about male singing voices. It seems to me that in much of popular/rock music there are just not that many “great” male voices. There are some great singers, some great musicians, etc, but when you get down to basics, they just don’t have the best voices.

Good examples are some of my favorite artists. Billy Joel, to me a music god, but not a great voice. Harry Chapin is another of my gods with perhaps one of the worst singing voices of recording artists (I know he is dead and I should not speak ill of the dead, but it is the truth, and if he were alive I don’t think he would disagree!). Even the holiest of holy, The Beatles did not have the greatest of voices (although they are not at all near the bottom of the list).

I have long given thought to what male artists have great voices. I have discussed two here so far. One is Art Garfunkel. Listen to “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and you will not only be blown away by the amazing song, but by his powerful and clear voice. He has a remarkable range and can sing almost anything. The other singer I mentioned is Dennis De Young of Styx. A very different style than Garfunkel, but nonetheless a wonderful voice.

For my song of the day, I am going to add another name to my great male voices list. And please, no snickering! John Denver. I have always liked John Denver, probably because my mom listened to him so much. He had a remarkable way with words, and his voice can only be described as sweet sounding. He skillfully combined country/western music with pop music and he crossed over to the pop charts more than almost any other country singer (in fact, I don’t really consider him a country singer).

He had many great songs, but I think that my favorite is one called “Looking For Space.” Rather than speak about it, here is a link to the lyrics.  I would love comments with other candidates of best male voice!

This video contains two songs, and “Looking For Space” is at the 3:30 mark.

Busy day

Yesterday was kind of slow, but today, at least tonight will be a bit busier. Tonight will be my first pack meeting as the new cubmaster for my son’s cub scout pack. I am a bit nervous, but I am sure everything will work out ok. Avi love the cub scouts and I hope that he will continue in scouting all the way to Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts. Below is a photo of Avi in his Cub uniform.

Avi in Uniform

After scouts, we have to put the finishing touches on Avi’s Purim costume (photo on Friday). I discussed some about Purim the other day, but we get dressed up in costume the kids usually have some sort of costume parade before or after the public reading of the book of Esther at our Synagogue (Thursday night). It is a lot of fun and the kids also get goody bags. This will be the first time we have Purim in our Synagogue building since the fire last August, so hopefully it will be even more fun!

Then on Friday the kids will have a carnival at school and I even have off that day, being that the calendar has been nice enough to put Good Friday on the same day as Purim.

So I am looking forward to a fun few days and a nice little vacation from work.

Here are some fun Purim videos.

This next one requires a few definitions. A Gmach is a communal organization where someone will have a bunch of a particular item that people use a lot and loan them out to other members of the community. A good example is a one in my community that has artificial flowers that can be borrowed for different events. A Purim Shpeil is a funny skit that is traditional to do on Purim. And finally many families who have moved from the US to Israel have kept some part of their business or work life in America, so the husbands often fly back to the US for short trips.

Song of the day

Well, since I picked a Paul Simon Song yesterday, by the end of the day and this morning I dialed up the “Old Friends” boxed set on my ipod (can you call it a boxed set when it is on your ipod?)

Simon and Garfunkel are perhaps the best male duo in modern musical history. They sang so well together, and it was as if they were just meant to be. Their harmonies were perfect and I consider Art Garfunkel perhaps one of the best male singing voices (perhaps more on male voices tomorrow).

To pick a song from S&G is almost impossible, there are just too many good ones. As I listened on the train, one song popped out, and perhaps it was because it brought back a memory. When I was in USY, I remember being in someone’s living room and my friend Sheryl (aka wrekehavoc) playing “America” on the piano (maybe it was her living room, I cannot recall). That memory sticks out because it was back then that my love for music began and moments like that helped me to learn that I have some small talent at singing (more on that another time).

So, today’s song is America by Simon and Garfunkel.

Enjoy!
